Methodology

Monde Selection’s mission, in regard to diet and health products, is to entrust the task of analysing the main parameters to independent experts such as nutritionists, university professors and chemists. These parameters are:

  • Is the information given to the consumer about the product complete? (list of ingredients, nutritional composition, active substance content, instructions for use, dosage recommended, conditions of use,... )
  • Are the intrinsic qualities of the product, communicated to the consumer by the producer, scientifically accurate and does the product contain enough active ingredients to achieve the effect it claims?

Monde Selection also relies on the official European and American norms when carrying out quality controls. Thus, our Institute relies on European legislation in terms of food supplements and labelling or the renowned "Food and Drug Administration” of the United States.

However, the role of Monde Selection is not to replace the Ministry of health and wellness in each country, which as the body responsible for public health, is the sole decider of products that may be marketed.

In order to evaluate diet and health products, Monde Selection has drafted an evaluation sheet with about twenty different parameters including those listed below.

  • List of ingredients
  • Active substance content
  • Content and form of commercial claims
  • Correct description of the usefulness of the product
  • Compliance of the nutritional label
  • Information about the dosage, conditions of use and expiry dates
  • Coherence between commercial claims and product composition
  • Enough active ingredients to achieve the effect stated in the commercial claims
  • Laboratory result of some analyses
  • In some cases an organoleptic test will be done

Each parameter is weighted and contributes to the final result of the general evaluation of the product.

Jury

The experience of the Jury, of which some members have been working with Monde Selection for over 25 years, is certainly the best guarantee of good and fair evaluation of quality.

It is these years of experience that make the members of our jury capable of judging products from all over the world with the subtlety required for this task.

This jury is composed of a college of independent experts including:

  • nutritionists
  • university professors
  • chemists

Through their professions, they are always abreast of developments in scientific research and legislation in relation to diet and health products.

They also have access to official laboratories approved by the Federal Public Service in Belgium, such as BIOTOX, BRUCEFO and INSTITUT MEURICE.

Finally, Monde Selection also works with the company NSF Euro Consultants Group specialists in quality control for the agri-food sector.

Quality Awards

After the various tests and tastings, the juries of Monde Selection award Bronze, Silver, Gold or Grand Gold quality labels to products that are outstanding in terms of the different evaluation criteria.

A label that each winner may display on their product for 3 years.

In addition, Monde Selection awards Trophies to companies for the constant efforts they make to reach and maintain a high level of excellence.

Lastly, the experts of Monde Selection may award a Prize of the Jury to one product in each category that the jury unanimously notices as outstanding for one of its qualities such as its taste or its innovative nature.
