Against the accumulation of body fat

Marketed and produced by the Taiwanese company A.G.V. Products Corporation, Nestea Oolong Tea is a fibre-enriched iced tea.

Its health objective is that of regulating blood sugar levels and preventing the accumulation of body fat.

To achieve this goal, the product contains an ingredient known as ‘resistant maltodextrin.’ This is a fibre that has shown positive results when used as a supplement for the prevention of diabetes. Moreover, the fibre is also undergoing studies for a potential effect on reducing body fat storage, but data in this regard are more limited at this time (as the studies are mainly carried out on animal subjects). As such, further clinical studies are needed to verify this specific property.

It should be noted that, in a more general scope, dietary fibre is being studied in the context of cardiovascular prevention. High intakes of fibre are associated with a reduction in the prevalence of coronary heart disease and cardiovascular risk factors. Furthermore, fibre, in particular soluble fibre, has been widely documented to have a satiogenic effect.

Within this context, the Monde Selection experts particularly appreciated the quality of the product information communicated on the packaging. They considered the text to be clear, comprehensive and transparent towards the consumer.

The information contributes to the adequate use of the product and guarantees the safety of the user (among other things through the inclusion of mentions specifically reserved for diabetics). The experts found that the labelled information on the two health claims also complies with the requirements set by the Taiwan Ministry of Health and Welfare.

In addition, the consumption of Nestea Oolong Tea contributes to one’s daily necessary water intake. What’s more, the consumption of water and fibre simultaneously ensures that the latter has a positive effect on intestinal function.

On a different note, it bears mentioning that the product does not contain any added sugar, which is a positive aspect for a drink of this type, seeing as such products are too often treated as a simple soft drink.

Finally, from an organoleptic point of view, the experts appreciated the honey aroma which gives this tea a subtle and pleasant touch.

All of these attributes led the Monde Selection experts to award Nestea Oolong Tea the Gold award.

"Each year, one product per category is awarded the Prize of the Jury as a token of excellence in know-how and quality. In order to qualify, the product must be unanimously selected as a “coup de cœur” by the jury members. The winner of the Prize of the Jury is then selected from a group of just 5 nominees, which makes this award an even greater honour for the recipient."
