A richly layered barley shochu distilled on Iki Island

Produced by Genkai Shuzo on Iki Island, the birthplace of barley shochu, Mugi-Shochu-Iki is distilled using two-thirds locally grown barley and one-third rice koji. Recognised by the WTO as a protected regional spirit since 1995, Iki Shochu reflects centuries of distilling tradition dating back to the 16th century. Genkai Shuzo has been producing shochu since 1900, using underground spring water from the island’s highest mountain and drawing on the richness of local barley to shape a style defined by balance, clarity and regional identity.

Mugi-Shochu-Iki is presented in a 720 ml glass bottle with a mechanical swing-top cap, housed in a wooden case. The packaging offers both tactile presence and a sense of ceremony, reflecting the product’s complexity and aged character.

The jury was particularly struck by the sensory balance that Mugi-Shochu-Iki manages to achieve. Visually, its pale yellow hue and brilliant clarity offer a sense of purity and finesse, setting the tone for a tasting experience that follows through with quiet confidence. On the nose, the spirit delivers an aromatic profile that is both generous and composed: vanilla and toasted grain blend harmoniously with floral notes and a subtle spicy lift, while the alcohol supports rather than dominates.

The palate confirms the first impressions with an opening that is both rich and controlled. Woody and toasted cereal notes take the lead, followed by delicate hints of liquorice and dried herbs. There is a notable layering of flavours, giving the tasting a structured rhythm. The mid-palate reveals added depth with tobacco and a touch of nuttiness, while the mouthfeel remains smooth and enveloping. A creamy texture and lingering finish underscore the spirit’s refinement, with oak and grain resonating into a dry, elegant aftertaste.

For its poise, aromatic integrity and textured finish, Mugi Shochu Iki stands out as a confident expression of its category — and for these reasons, it is a finalist for the 2025 Jury Prize.
