Connor’s Stout Porter

Inspired by the British stout recipes from the 1700s, this beer is brewed in Malaysia by Connor’s Brewery, a division of Carlsberg Asia. Launched in 2021, it is now available in a 500ml can and a 320ml can, with the latter being the one tasted for this presentation.

A beautifully refreshing Stout Porter

The classic can design features an elegant black color and is adorned with the colors of the Union Jack, representing the beer’s British origins. Among the information provided on the can is the mention that it is made from a blend of four different malts. It also instructs to shake the can until it no longer makes a sound before opening it to achieve a creamy foam head.

Once opened, this precaution proves necessary because if the can is not shaken, the beer produces a foam with large bubbles that dissipates quickly. However, if the instructions are followed, the foam becomes denser, with fine bubbles and good retention, although it could be even creamier.

The beer’s appearance is typical of most Stout Porters, with an opaque black color and some reddish reflections.

The aroma is not particularly strong, but it develops discreet and pleasant roasted notes.

Some tasters expressed disappointment with the low carbonation, but in terms of flavors, the roasted profile dominates over other nuances. Nonetheless, this doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of a beer that remains very easy to drink.

With all these qualities, Connor’s Stout Porter has been selected as a nominee for this year’s Jury Prize at Monde Selection in its category.

“Each year, one product per category is awarded the Prize of the Jury as a token of excellence in know-how and quality. In order to qualify, the product must be unanimously selected as a “coup de cœur” by the jury members. The winner of the Prize of the Jury is then selected from a group of just 5 nominees, which makes this award an even greater honour for the recipient.”
