A crisp and balanced golden ale brewed in Macao

Macau Beer was born in 1996 from a desire to express the city of Macao’s unique spirit through brewing. Combining Portuguese and Chinese influences, the brand has grown from a small local project into a regional symbol, known for its balanced ale-style beers brewed with 100% malt and aromatic hops. With roots in traditional European top-fermentation and a modern vision, Macau Beer positions itself as both a tribute to its home city and an ambassador for its evolving identity.

Macau Beer Golden Ale is packaged in a green glass bottle—an echo of its early maritime-inspired designs—reinforcing its cultural character and approachable style.

The jury appreciated the beer’s bright and polished appearance. Pouring a deep golden to amber colour with excellent clarity, it is topped by a generally persistent white head, though slight variations in bubble size were observed. Overall, it presents a fresh and inviting visual impression.

On the nose, the profile remains within classic lines: warm cereal and light malt tones lead. A touch of herbal hop character provides a subtle lift without distracting from the malt focus.

Tasted, the beer follows a clean and uncomplicated arc. A light malt sweetness opens the palate, followed briefly by soft fruit notes and a modest, well-judged bitterness. While the mid-palate leans towards simplicity, it avoids imbalance, allowing the beer to remain approachable and refreshing. The dry finish adds crispness and prevents fatigue.

The mouthfeel is smooth and moderate in body, with fine carbonation that contributes a pleasant liveliness. The aftertaste is short and dry, carrying just enough bitterness and malt to leave a clean impression.

For its clarity, balance and expression of local identity, Macau Beer Golden Ale confidently earns its place as a finalist for the 2025 Jury Prize.
